LinkedIn Top Companies 2017: Where India wants to work now

The Top Companies list is based on the billions of actions taken by LinkedIn's 500+ million members. Our data team, working with our global editorial team, analyzed those actions to come up with a blended score ranking the winners in each country.

Here are this year's top 25 companies in India:


Flipkart snagged the No. 1 spot for the second year running despite some tough challenges over the last several months. The 10-year-old company, which has become synonymous with Indian e-commerce, shook off those issues to secure a record $1 billion in funding. It also has plans to hire 3,000 full-time and temporary workers this year.
Number of employees in India: 30,000 (including contractors)
Time-off: Employees with over two years at Flipkart can take a career break to pursue higher education, spend time with family or attend to a medical emergency.
A personal welcome: On their first day, employees are picked up by chauffeur-driven cars and sent on a treasure hunt to familiarize themselves with the office.

Amazon, a rival of homegrown Flipkart, once again secured the No. 2 spot on the list.
The e-commerce giant seems to be on a mission to touch everything we do online, from storing our data to delivering our new shoes, and its local success has been huge. CEO Jeff Bezos credited India as one of the reasons behind the company’s higher than expected revenue last quarter.
Number of employees in India: more than 10,000
Investing in India: “I assure you that we’ll keep investing in technology and infrastructure while working hard to invent on behalf of our customers and small and medium businesses in India,” said Bezos.
Beyond Bollywood: Amazon is rapidly expanding its Prime Video offerings in the country, investing $5 billion in 2016 with plans to double that investment in 2017.

One of the “big four” auditors, KPMG India works with a client base of over 2,700 companies, providing audit, advisory and tax services. Employees get to tackle some of the biggest issues facing Indian businesses and governments today, like redefining urban growth in Maharashtra or helping guide the future of renewable energy.
Number of global employees: 189,000
CEO change: Arun M. Kumar took over as chairman and CEO of the firm in February, succeeding Richard Rekhy.
Regional reach: KPMG India has offices in Chandigarh, Gurgaon, Noida, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Kochi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

One97 Communications is widely known for its payment and commerce platform, Paytm. The company had a banner year thanks to the Indian government’s demonetization drive, helping boost Paytm’s registered users to over 200 million. One97 is expanding even further into the financial services space and is on the verge of launching its first payments bank.
Number of employees: 13,000
Going Global: Paytm launched its bill payment service in Canada. It has a 55-member team in Toronto.
Notable perks: The company offers an Employee Stock Ownership Plan to top performers irrespective of their designation or seniority. Top performers also get an annual bonus, over and above the annual appraisal.

Few companies in India have revolutionized urban mobility like Ola. Not only has the company gone head-to-head with Uber in the ride-sharing market, it’s also launched services like shuttles, car rentals and mobile payments. The company debuted its latest launch, Ola Play, last year, taking in-car entertainment to all-new levels. It’s initiatives like these, rolled out at a blitzkrieg pace, that give employees a strong sense of ownership.
Number of employees: 6,000
Big name backers: SoftBank, DST Global and Sequoia Capital have all invested in Ola.
Multilingual deskmates: In addition to English, Ola employees also speak Hindi (23 percent), Kannada (5 percent), Tamil (5 percent) and Telugu (5 percent).

HCL Technologies’ culture can be summed up in one unique word: “Ideapreneurship.” (The company’s even trademarked the term.) It’s the belief that every employee should be empowered to come up with great ideas then be able to put them into practice to solve both operational and customer challenges. The information technology company is the fourth largest software services exporter, helping companies navigate new technologies like Internet of Things and machine learning.
Number of global employees: 111,000
Talent pipeline: The company recently recruited 200 high school students into an on-the-job training program for software engineers with the goal of developing a pipeline of skilled tech talent for entry-level jobs.
At the helm: HCL is providing the technology that will power this year’s Volvo Ocean Race, the world’s longest sailing competition covering 46,000 nautical miles and four oceans.

For US-based Adobe, India is a key innovation hub. Nearly 30 percent of the company’s research and development is centered in the country, its biggest R&D location outside of its headquarters. Adobe, which develops products like Photoshop and InDesign, has also been hiring rapidly in India, filling 1,500 positions in the last year. “We have probably grown faster in India than anywhere else in the world,” said CEO Shantanu Narayen.
Number of local employees: 4,500
Health focus: Adobe provides special health perks like doctors that visit campuses and provide consultations free of charge to employees and their families. It also reimburses up to ₹37,663 for gym memberships, fitness classes and other wellness activities.
Take a break: Adobe offers long-time employees sabbaticals after they reach certain milestones, from four weeks paid time off after five years of continuous service to six weeks off after 15, 20, 25 or more years at the company.

Alphabet — still better known as its main division, Google — has a legendary culture. The bikes, the food, the foosball; you’ve heard it a million times. But those aren’t what keeps the company on this list. What does? The opportunity and resources employees are given to tackle problems big and small. Many of these solutions, like being able to download maps or YouTube clips for offline access, started in India before going global.
Number of global employees: 72,000
A few words from the founder: “In the technology industry, where revolutionary ideas drive the next big growth areas, you need to be a bit uncomfortable to stay relevant,” says Larry Page.
Local innovation: Google recently launched its Solve for India program to engage with entrepreneurs and developers in smaller cities around the country, like Pune and Hyderabad, who are trying to solve distinctly Indian problems.

Moving up to No. 9 from 16th place last year, OYO Rooms is experiencing growth in all categories. On the funding side, the branded network of budget hotels is closing out a $250 million fundraising round, which will bring its valuation to $850 million. The company is plotting geographical expansion as well, with plans to move into Nepal this year after expanding into Malaysia last year. To support this growth, the company plans to hire 4,000 employees this year.
Number of employees in India: 1,700
First day traditions: New employees are welcomed with a nickname like “Warrior” or “Spartan” to get them excited about their new career.
Office culture: All employees work together in an open office with bench-like tables. There’s even an Office Mayor, who is responsible for employee experience.

Reliance Industries, best known for its dominance in retail, oil and energy, has also transformed the Indian telecommunications industry in the last few years through its subsidiary Reliance Jio, which just debuted long-awaited fibre home broadband services. The company also backs startup accelerator GenNext Hub, which uniquely helps top Indian startups grow rapidly by becoming a client. The Hub’s “Scalerator” approach facilitates contract discussions between startup founders and RIL leaders.
Number of employees in India: more than 50,000
Claim to fame: Reliance is the largest polyester yarn and fibre producer in the world.

Despite headwinds in the Indian IT industry, Capgemini said it may recruit more than 20,000 new team members this year. (There have been reports that large-scale layoffs are possible, which the company has refuted.) To draw in those employees, the France-based consulting, technology and outsourcing company offers flexible hours, reduced workweeks and generous vacation time.
Number of employees in India: more than 100,000
Worldwide focus on millennials: Capgemini introduced the millennial innovation council, an expansion of its employee resource group program, with chapters all around the world that connect millennials with mentoring, networking and learning opportunities.
Keeping skills fresh: “We continue to accelerate our training programs in 2017 with over 2,000 India employees having already undertaken up skilling and emerging technologies training alone,” Capgemini said.

Accenture, a global professional services company, serves clients in more than 120 countries, helping them uncover transformational solutions to keep up in today’s digital-first economy. Accenture makes sure its 401,000 global employees are equipped with the latest skills to meet those demands. In its last fiscal year, the company invested $941 million to develop workers, including training more than 60 percent of employees at its India Delivery Centers for Technology with the skills needed for next generation IT solutions.
Number of employees in India: 140,000
In-demand skills: Leadership, curiosity and authenticity. “Curiosity is critical because the pace of change in technology and in the industries we serve is staggering,” Accenture told LinkedIn.
Security first: Accenture recently opened a new Cyber Center in Bangalore, creating a hub where clients, Accenture specialists and other industry experts from universities and beyond can uncover the next generation of security solutions and outpace cyber adversaries.

This Big Four accounting and consulting firm promises employees challenges — whether that’s auditing the financial records of India’s biggest companies or coaching executives on cyber risks. To keep workers growing, Deloitte India encourages constant learning and development, offering everything from online courses to mentorship programs. The firm also provides novel perks, including a transportation reimbursement so expectant mothers can comfortably get to work.
Number of global employees: 244,400
Outside the office: Colleagues come together at events such as 10K races and Impact Day, an annual tradition when Deloitte professionals fan out across India to help on education, healthcare and environmental projects.
Keep in touch: Even after they leave, employees remain connected; the company’salumni network includes more than 2,000 former staffers.

The IT firm, the fifth-largest in India, offers a work environment heavy on training — employees can rotate jobs, take courses and participate in programs like “young CEO,” providing early leadership opportunities. TechM works with more than 800 companies to offer everything from networking support to consulting services. While the Indian IT industry has faced growing challenges, the company’s managing director and CEO, CP Gurnani, sees strategic openings: “Automation is the new game-changer. It is an opportunity.”
Number of global employees: more than 117,000
Things happen: “With Murphy’s Law always at work, a normal work day may well be interrupted,” the company notes, one reason it offers flexible scheduling and chances to work from home.
Luxurious offices: Tech Manindra doesn’t shy away from fun. Some corporate campuses resemble resorts with gardens, expansive gyms and even swimming pools.

The rapid expansion of meal-delivery startup Swiggy means the company is also on a hiring binge; it tells LinkedIn it plans to increase its staff by about 30%, or 300 positions, in the next year. The company already averages 90,000 daily orders across its eight cities and is said to be valued at $400 million. And, while the industry is cutthroat, Swiggy’s hoping to avoid the mistakes of its fallen rivals by employing its own delivery personnel to offer fast, reliable service.
Number of employees: more than 1,000
A swanky home: The company’s new corporate office includes “a fully loaded games room, stocked-up pantry, nap rooms and a cozy little library.”
Still hungry?: Employees also receive food cards, “which are loaded with cash each month, and can be used at supermarkets, food outlets, kirana stores, etc.”

Cisco is moving beyond its core router and switch businesses. It recently sealed a $3.7 billion deal to buy AppDynamics, snapping up the software unicorn before its planned IPO. Cisco is also moving into subscription sales and other sources of recurring revenue. Those plans require a robust hiring outlook. As of February, it had some 3,200 open positions globally, and Cisco says it’s particularly looking for security, programming and solutions sales expertise.
Number of global employees: more than 73,000
Popping up in surprising places: Cisco’s engineers do everything from preventing nasty security threats to securing communications during emergencies, like earthquakes and hurricanes.
Giving back: In 2016 alone, employees logged over 227,000 volunteer hours, and the company gives staffers five paid days to do volunteer work.

IDFC Bank, part of IDFC Ltd. group, stresses on its youth. The bank, launched in Oct. 2015, is among the newest in India and tells LinkedIn it attracts those looking to shake up the industry’s “age-old conventions.” Its employees benefit from perks that begin even before the first day: New hires receive a pre-loaded gift card so they can have coffee with friends, “telling them about the exciting new bank they are about to join.”
Number of local employees: 4,000
A new job in 140 characters: Last year, the company asked for applicants to submit their Twitter resume. “All candidates had to do was to tweet us in the classic 140-character limit pitching why we should hire them,” an effort that got a great response, the company says.
Where it’s hiring: The company forecasts 1500 job openings in the coming year; “the primary areas of focus will be the front-line and operations roles.”

The IT services provider — among the world’s largest — knows the needs of clients can quickly change. So Wipro is working to help its employees update their skills; in the last fiscal year, it provided digital training for 39,600 employees, teaching many Python, Java and other programming languages. The industry faces challenges, but Wipro’s history is defined by change; it got its start in 1945 as a vegetable oils manufacturer and kept evolving. 
Number of global employees: more than 170,000
Full transparency: The company posts every open job, making it easier for employees to see available positions and determine their next move.
New look: The company recently rebranded itself to reflect its changing business, abandoning its iconic rainbow flower in favor of a system of concentric rainbow dots.

Telecom giant Tata Communications says its culture is built on openness. One example: “Any employee at any time can directly block time with our CEO, Vinod Kumar, for a chat about the organisation,” the company tells LinkedIn. The firm encourages innovation in all forms, even hosting a competition that invited employees’ children to submit ideas on how tech could improve the world, an initiative “received with great enthusiasm,” the company says.
Number of local employees: 8,900
What it hopes to see in applicants: Innovation, its CEO says, begins with curiosity and a desire to learn. So the company screens for skills and experience, of course, but also personality. “We look for passion.”
Family time: The company offers flexible leave policies for employees caring for young children — and the elderly.

Vodafone, India’s second-largest telecom operator, embraces a culture of change. On alist of values guiding employees, it cites speed first; the company says it refuses to “allow the fear of failure to get in our way.” Some recent innovations include SuperWifi, a secure enterprise-level wireless network, and a new money-transfer feature. It also aims to create a fun workplace, organizing employee cricket matches, music lessons, dance classes and more activities.
Number of global employees: more than 107,000
Career explorer: Vodafone uses an internal career opportunity process to encourage employees to make lateral moves across functions and locations.
Maximize that potential: The company offers various training opportunities for employees of all skill levels; one programme, called Lighthouse, takes high-potential senior leaders through a 12-month series aimed at boosting their leadership skills.

Cognizant, the IT consulting and outsourcing firm, helps everyone from health care providers to banks run digital businesses. It prides itself on a non-hierarchical culture and well-defined career paths. For those looking for challenges, “we are at the center of the fintech, healthtech, and smart product revolutions,” it tells LinkedIn. And, while automation and digital transformation are putting pressure on the Indian IT industry, the company’s acquiring new firms and says there is growing demand for its services.
Number of local employees: 188,000
Company mantra: The company says it’s “born global,” given that the majority of Cognizant’s employees are located in India, even though the company’s based in the U.S. and maintains operations worldwide.
The traits that define employees: “Our associates have a ‘can-do’ attitude. Responsiveness, accountability, and high quality are core to our delivery model,” it tells LinkedIn.

Grofers, an on-demand delivery service, has experienced rapid growth since launching in 2013. The company now has 3 million app downloads on iOS and Android, and its user base is growing four-fold every month. After ramping too quickly, though, Grofers recently had to scale down in nine cities and lay off 10 percent of its workforce. Apossible merger with larger rival BigBasket may help soften the blow. If the two decide to join forces, Grofers could be valued at up to $200 million.
Number of employees in India: About 2,000 (as of last June)
Impressive backing: Grofers’ investors include SoftBank, Sequoia Capital and Tiger Global.
What works in a downturn?: Transparency. The company was clear in its communication to laid-off staffers about the health of the business and why tough decisions had to be taken.

After Oracle’s CEO met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, the company has followed through with major investments in India. This includes building a new state-of-the-art campus in Bengaluru outfitted with entertainment lounges and a basketball court, setting up nine incubation centers to contribute to the country’s booming startup culture and training 500,000 students every year through the company’s education program.
